The two interior courtyards of the Palacio Riquelme, in the Plaza del Mercado, will once again recover their original appearance. The Local Government Board has awarded the works for the second phase of rehabilitation, restoration and conservation of the building to the company EJOC2004 for 1,305,531.92 euros, according to the Ayuntamiento de Jerez de la Frontera.
The action has an execution period of twelve months and will focus on the recovery of the two interior courtyards and the gallery that separates and connects them. Work will also be carried out on the annex body attached to the façade on calle Cordobeses, a single storey, with new claddings and installations.
The project includes the restoration of the interior neoclassical façade of the carriage courtyard and the rehabilitation of the party walls on calle Cordobeses, where an old access opening that is now blind will be recovered. On calle Alegría, the window openings will be recovered and the existing grilles repaired.
A first phase already completed
This second phase continues the first, which the Ayuntamiento has already completed with an investment of approximately 755,000 euros and which EJOC2004 also executed. That intervention focused on the main façade and the first two bays of the building, with structural consolidation work on walls, pilasters and columns, and the execution of new floor slabs and roofs with materials and techniques compatible with the original construction.
One of the most notable works was the comprehensive restoration of the Renaissance stone façade, with cleaning, consolidation, protection and recovery of its architectural elements. That first stage made it possible to guarantee the conservation of part of the structure of a building that had suffered decades of abandonment and deterioration.
The delegate for Urbanism and Housing, Belén de la Cuadra, has stated that the award represents "another decisive step to continue recovering a building of great historical, artistic and architectural value".
