The Castillo de Santa Catalina opens its Day of the Dead altar this Sunday, November 1. As every year, it is installed by the Asociación de Mexicanos en Andalucía, based in Cádiz, and can be visited from 11:00 until November 10, with no opening ceremony.
The association invites the public to take part by bringing photographs, personal objects, flowers, dedications and memories of their deceased loved ones. The idea is to share a Mexican tradition that, according to the organization, turns memory into a bond of love and togetherness.
An altar dedicated to rock in Spanish
This year the altar is dedicated to the musicians of rock in Spanish who marked several generations. Among those honored are Gustavo Cerati, leader of Soda Stereo; the Argentine drummer Martín Carrizo; Indio Solari, a reference of Argentine rock, and Rita Guerrero, singer of Santa Sabina.
The association notes that with this tribute it celebrates the mark that music leaves on the lives of those who live far from their land and find in songs a bridge to their memories and their roots.
Offering for the victims of Toledo
The organization has expressed its condolences and solidarity with the victims of the train accident that occurred in Toledo, their families and all those affected. As a sign of respect and support in mourning, it will place an offering of white flowers and butterflies in memory of the victims.
The Asociación de Mexicanos en Andalucía thanks the Fundación Municipal de Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Cádiz and the organizations that make it possible to keep this tradition alive in the city.
No registration or ticket is needed to visit the altar: simply go to the Castillo de Santa Catalina between Sunday, November 1 and Tuesday, November 10, during the venue's opening hours. Anyone who wishes to leave a memento may bring photographs, flowers or personal objects of their deceased.
