The façade of El Puerto de Santa María Town Hall and the new ornamental fountain in Plaza del Polvorista have been lit in pink since Monday, October 19, for World Breast Cancer Day. The fountain will keep the colour throughout the week.
The façade of the Casa Consistorial, which lights up Plaza Isaac Peral, and the new ornamental fountain in Plaza del Polvorista have been lit in pink since Monday, October 19, on the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day. The Ayuntamiento de El Puerto de Santa María explains that the fountain will keep this colour throughout the week, so that the message of the day will remain visible in two spaces of the city beyond the day of the commemoration.
An institutional event with the associations
The Salón Regio of the Ayuntamiento hosted an institutional meeting presided over by the mayor, Germán Beardo, and the councillor for Bienestar Social y Familia, Carmen Lara, together with other members of the Government team and of the Corporación Municipal and the territorial delegate of the Junta de Andalucía in Cádiz, Millán Alegre. At the event a manifesto was read by AMUCAN Bahía, with its president, Yolanda Beláustegui, accompanied by Antonia Calvo Jarana, of the Sede Humanitaria Portuense del Cáncer, and Susana Casado Gómez, representing the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC).
Recognition for families
Beardo stressed the families of people with a cancer diagnosis. «When cancer enters a home, it does not only affect the person who receives the diagnosis. There are fathers, mothers, children, partners, siblings and friends who come together, who support, who care and who fight together,» said the mayor, who extended his thanks to the associations of El Puerto.
The first edil stated that the Ayuntamiento wants to continue adding resources and working with the city's social organisations, and maintained that the pink lighting «is a collective demand, a commitment to life» and a reminder of the need to continue supporting research.
Prevention and early detection
With this initiative, the city joins the awareness movement that every October recalls the importance of prevention, early detection, access to treatments, comprehensive care and research to improve the survival and quality of life of those affected.
