The Asociación Andaluza Jerezanos de la Diáspora has named the mayor of Jerez, María José García-Pelayo, and the city itself as honorary members for its status as Spanish Capital of Gastronomy. The recognition is part of the events marking the entity's 50th anniversary, which brings together in Madrid those who emigrated from Jerez. The deputy mayor Agustín Muñoz attended in Madrid the association's traditional Berza de Navidad, an event that brings together the jerezanos of the Diáspora around the table and the traditions of the land. The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, also attended the event. Before the meal, a mass was held in memory of the deceased members of the Diáspora Jerezana at the Iglesia de Los Jesuitas. According to the association, with this gesture it wants to highlight Jerez cuisine, preserve its traditions, strengthen the city's gastronomic offering and recognize gastronomy as a driver of employment and economic development. The deputy mayor congratulated the members for these five decades and for acting as ambassadors of Jerez outside the city. The link between the Ayuntamiento and the entity goes back a long way. During the last Feria del Caballo, the mayor attended alongside members of the local government the toast at the Templete Municipal with this association on the occasion of the naming of Jerez as Capital Gastronómica, an event that also served to celebrate the 50th anniversary. The events of this anniversary have continued with the meeting held in Madrid. The association was founded in 1975, when a group of jerezanos residing in Madrid decided to create a meeting point to stay connected to their land. Over the years, the Berza de Navidad has become the entity's central event, where flavors, memories and the pride of belonging to Jerez are shared.
