The Trafalgar Lighthouse is declared an Asset of Cultural Interest as a Monument

The Council of Ministers has approved the declaration of the Trafalgar Lighthouse, in the province of Cádiz, as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category. The facility depends on the Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz and Puertos del Estado.

·

El Faro de Trafalgar will have the maximum heritage protection provided by law for a property in Spain. The Council of Ministers has approved its declaration as a Bien de Interés Cultural with the category of Monument, according to the central Government body itself.

A lighthouse in service

The facility is attached to the Autoridad Portuaria de la Bahía de Cádiz and to Puertos del Estado, dependent on the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. The lighthouse performs a public service for maritime safety, so the declaration affects a building that is still in operation and not an abandoned construction.

It was already catalogued

El Faro de Trafalgar was included in 2017 in the Catalogue of lighthouses with heritage value of Spain, drawn up within the framework of the National Plan for Industrial Heritage. That catalogue described it as a historical testimony to the technology and science of its time. The declaration now approved goes beyond that recognition and grants it the status of Monument.
