The devotions in honour of San Servando and San Germán, patrons of Cádiz, ended on Friday, October 23, with the main service held in the Cathedral. The Local Council of Brotherhoods and Confraternities attended it, as the Council itself reports.
A three-day triduum
The acts had begun on Wednesday, October 21. The brotherhood of the Holy Patrons and the Cathedral Chapter organised them jointly, and with Friday's service they were closed.
The Eucharist was presided over by the apostolic administrator, Ramón Valdivia. The portal already reported on October 24 that the service was celebrated according to the Hispanic-Mozarabic rite, concelebrated by the Cathedral Chapter, and that at the end of it the relics of the two brothers processed through the interior of the temple. That same day, in the morning, the brotherhood had made the floral offering at the triumphal arches of Puerta de Tierra.
Who the patrons are
San Servando and San Germán are patrons of the city and also of the Diocese of Cádiz. Their link with Cádiz goes back to the first centuries of Christianity: according to tradition, both brothers suffered persecution for defending their faith during the rule of the emperor Diocletian. The city has had them as patrons since 1619, as this portal recalled in its report of October 24.
An annual appointment
The feast of the Holy Patrons is repeated every year with a previous triduum and a solemn service in the Cathedral, which the Council of Brotherhoods usually attends on behalf of the city's confraternities.
