The image of Nuestra Señora de la Palma has once again taken to the streets of La Viña this Sunday. The procession, which commemorates the 271st anniversary of the Lisbon tsunami and the protection that tradition attributes to the Virgin over Cádiz, set out from the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Palma and later returned to its church. The route passed through Virgen de la Palma, San Félix, Corralón de los Carros, Trinidad, Diego Arias, Sacramento, Concepción, Hospital de Mujeres, Torre, Rosa y Pastora, among other streets in the neighbourhood. Before the departure, the choir of la Viña sang to the image on calle San Rafael. The procession included the Agrupación Musical Ecce Mater, which opens the parade, and the Banda de Música Julián Cerdán, from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, which accompanies the float of the Virgin.

Rosary, blessing of the waters and votive service

The procession brought to a close a day of All Saints with several events. There was a public rosary to La Caleta, the blessing of the waters and a votive service in the parish, presided over by Ramón Valdivia, apostolic administrator of Cádiz and Ceuta. The celebration commemorates the tsunami of November 1, 1755, when tradition places the miraculous intervention of the Virgin to stop the advance of the waters. The event is recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of activity of ethnological interest and forms part of the identity of the viñero neighbourhood, according to Onda Cádiz.
