The role of women in wine
The municipal delegate for Women, Mª Ángeles Martínez Rico, explained that the aim is to bring the women of Chiclana closer to the world of wine from a woman's perspective, recognising their history and the leading role they have today in the sector. Along the same lines, she noted that the history of women in the wine sector of the province of Cádiz is «a chronicle of visibility won against the tide».
The Town Council recalls that during the commercial boom of Jerez wine in the 18th and 19th centuries, laws and customs prevented women from leading businesses in their own right, and that it was widows who took over the running of major firms after the death of their husbands. It cites among them Teresa Rizo y Velasco, Gertrudis Viñalet, the Viuda de Harmony in El Puerto de Santa María and the Viuda de Manjón in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, promoter of the Manzanilla El Rocío. It adds that Aurora Ambrosy Lacave ran the Pedro Romero wineries between 1911 and 1921.
In the second half of the 20th century, the first women who led on their own merit emerged, such as Pilar Aranda Latorre, considered the first official woman winemaker of the Marco de Jerez, and Pilar Plá Pechovierto, at the head of El Maestro Sierra. Today more than 200 women hold positions of maximum responsibility in the Denominations of Origin of the province of Cádiz, according to the data handled by the Council.
