The Cádiz Guitar Festival holds this Saturday, October 24, its second date in El Puerto de Santa María with the Cuban guitarist Josué Fonseca, winner of the Concurso Internacional Ángel G. Piñero. The performance will be at 22.30 at the hotel Crisol Monasterio San Miguel and admission is free.
What can be heard
Fonseca's repertoire will include works by Moreno Torroba, Antonio Lauro, Isaac Albéniz, Joaquín Malats, Francisco Tárrega and Ángel G. Piñero himself, in a programme focused on the richness and diversity of the Spanish guitar.
The third and final date in the city will be on Sunday, November 8, at 11.00, also at the hotel Crisol Monasterio San Miguel. The Ukrainian guitarist Stanislav Steshenko and the Cuarteto Chagall will perform, with works by Miguel Llobet, Enrique Granados, Antonio Vivaldi, Luigi Boccherini and Ángel G. Piñero. Among the scheduled pieces are Alegrías en el Puerto and Brisas de Cádiz.
How the festival began
The local programme opened this Friday with the concert by Ricardo Fernández del Moral at the Peña Tomás El Nitri, which filled the venue with more than a hundred people. The singer and guitarist, winner of the Lámpara Minera and five first prizes at the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas, said it was «an honour to be tonight in El Puerto as part of a tribute festival to Ángel Piñero and in an entity as distinguished in the history of flamenco as the Peña el Nitri».
The festival is promoted by the European Guitar Foundation and has the collaboration of the Ayuntamiento de El Puerto. It celebrates its first edition from October 22 to November 8 in four cities of the province of Cádiz, with a total of thirteen free concerts. The event commemorates the anniversaries of Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo and reviews different musical traditions with the guitar as a common thread.
How to attend
The three performances in El Puerto are free. To check the programme and get the invitations you have to go to the festival's official website.
The deputy mayor of Culture, Historical Heritage and Education, Enrique Iglesias, has stressed that the incorporation of El Puerto into this initiative is «an opportunity to continue bringing live music closer to the public and to enjoy quality artistic proposals in spaces linked to our cultural identity». Iglesias has linked the city's participation with the figure of the guitarist, composer and teacher Ángel G. Piñero, who died in 2022, whose legacy is one of the references of this first edition, which has the Asociación de Guitarra Clásica Ángel G. Piñero as its protecting entity.
