The writer Natalia Palomo Pérez has presented in El Puerto de Santa María her second book, «Maestros de lo jondo. Cultura para no medicalizar la vida», published by Ediciones El Boletín. In it she interweaves her own story with a biographical and essayistic journey through great masters of flamenco.
What the book tells
As the author explains, each chapter combines personal memoir in the first person, with a colloquial and intimate tone, with a reflective analysis of the life, work and values of the corresponding artist. The volume reviews figures such as Lola Flores, Camarón, Enrique Morente, Moraíto, Pastora Pavón or Manuel Liñán, and also includes names from El Puerto such as Manuel de los Ríos, Pititi, Rancapino and Pablo Domínguez.
Palomo notes that the work is at once a tribute to flamenco as culture and philosophy of life and a testimony of personal healing through cante. The author defines the book as «a proposal for self-knowledge and training through live flamenco», with the aim of «symbolizing the importance of mental health and culture and vindicating the figure of the great masters of flamenco beyond their work».
The author's career
Natalia Palomo holds a degree in Labor Relations and a postgraduate degree in Research and Analysis of Flamenco from the University of Cádiz. She has been linked to the world of flamenco since she was 15 and combines her passion for music with therapy through her show «El flamenco como camino a la libertad», which has four national awards for social and cultural entrepreneurship. She publishes this second volume at 34, after «Camino a la libertad», her first book.
Upcoming performances
The show «El flamenco como camino a la libertad» can be seen soon in Nueva Jarilla on November 6, in Rota on November 13 and in Algar on November 21.
The presentation brought together more than fifty attendees and was led by Javier Villar, director of the Radio Puerto program «Calle Lechería», who described Palomo as «an artist with many concerns, who uses flamenco as medicine». The deputy mayor of Culture, Enrique Iglesias, has congratulated the author on this publication.
