The Hermandad del Nazareno de El Puerto de Santa María has had its own brotherhood house since this Friday. The building is at number 19 on La Palma street, right in the centre, and is laid out over two floors. According to the Ayuntamiento, the opening means that its nearly 700 members have a place to meet and organise their activity throughout the year, beyond Semana Santa.
What is inside
The ground floor houses the boardroom, secretary's office, treasury, mayordomía, a multi-purpose hall with display cases for the enseres, a bar and the toilets. That hall will be used for cabildos, talks, workshops and gatherings. On the same floor there is a museum-treasure area, an open space for the pasos of the titulares; the paso de Cristo is already assembled, pending the image. Upstairs are the archive, the room for the images' clothing, another storeroom and the Hermano Mayor's office.
A refurbished property
The Ayuntamiento notes that the work recovers a property in the historic centre and gives it back activity and life. The alcalde, Germán Beardo, has stated that the refurbishment is «a living example that together we move El Puerto forward». Beardo has congratulated the brotherhood for carrying the project through and has stressed the role of the cofradías as spaces for meeting and for solidarity work.
The Hermano Mayor, José María Naharro, has described the new headquarters as «a dream come true» and has thanked the Junta de Gobierno for its effort and those who have made the project possible for their collaboration. The brotherhood is already preparing initiatives linked to Christmas to strengthen fellowship among its members.
Who was there
At the inauguration the alcalde was accompanied by the Hermano Mayor, José María Naharro, members of the Junta de Gobierno, brothers and faithful of the corporation, representatives of the Consejo Local de Hermandades y Cofradías and the parish priest of the Prioral, Antonio Sebastián Sabido Salguero.
