The president of the Diputación de Cádiz receives the recognition at the opening of the honey fair in Prado del Rey, which closes this Sunday the 25th.
The Asociación Apícola de la Sierra de Cádiz has named the president of the Diputación Provincial de Cádiz, Almudena Martínez del Junco, honorary member for the support she gives to this economic activity. The recognition was presented at the opening of the tenth Feria de la Apicultura de la Sierra de Cádiz, which is being held at the Parque Ferial Blas Infante in Prado del Rey until this Sunday, October 25.
Around thirty stands and visiting hours
The fairground hosts around thirty stands from honey producers in the region. The exhibition tent can be visited this Saturday from 11:00 to 21:00 and on Sunday, the closing day, from 11:00 to 17:00. The programme includes live cooking demonstrations, tastings, competitions, workshops for children and a food tent.
A sector worth six million euros
According to the president of the Diputación, honey generates more than six million euros in the economy of Cádiz and sustains around 60,000 hives spread across some 200 holdings. Martínez del Junco has stated that the Sierra de Cádiz and, in particular, Prado del Rey, are "the hive of Europe", and has encouraged young people to ensure the generational renewal of the sector.
Technical sessions at the Teatro Municipal
Alongside the fair, the eleventh Jornadas Técnicas Divulgativas are being held at the Teatro Municipal Maestro José Toro Doblas. They address the control of invasive species, including the Asian hornet, quality studies of the honeys of the Sierra and new products such as propolis. The president of the Asociación Apícola de la Sierra, José Luis Fernández, has warned of the problem posed by the Asian hornet and has said he is confident that a solution will be found.
The mayor of Prado del Rey and diputada, Vanesa Beltrán, and the territorial delegate for Agriculture of the Junta de Andalucía in Cádiz, Francisco Moreno, also spoke at the opening. The president of the Diputación has announced that the honey corresponding to her as honorary sponsor of this edition will go to the Santa María de Gracia, Santa Rita and San José de las Clarisas convents.
Visiting the fair
The exhibition tent opens this Saturday from 11:00 to 21:00 and on Sunday 25 from 11:00 to 17:00 at the Parque Ferial Blas Infante in Prado del Rey. The full programme can be consulted at the fair's website.
